I have a ford 460 that was re-built by a machine shop before I bought it here are the specs: 460 .030 over all stock bottom end, D3VE heads stock, 9-1 compression, unknown cam grind but I was told it was a melling rv grind. Results were 160psi accross the board, EXCEPT Cyl #2 (150psi) and #5 (150-155psi) #2 cyl is known to have possible but unconfirmed damage or issues from a sparkplug meltdown/implosion of unknown cause. There is spark at the spark plugs, tested this with the scientific screwdriver method... Installed new plugs in the front of the engine (easy to get to), later pulled them out to do the compression test and they smell like fuel. Now comes the final test. Pulled all spark plugs from motor, removed all coils, held throttle wide open, and cranked. Just did a compression test on my mild 289 before beginning a top end update. Cylinders 1-6 were 150 PSI, but 7 and 8 were 130 PSI. Did a wet test on those two cylinders and they went up to 150 PSI. To me, that indicates a ring issue. Should I rebuild the whole engine now? A variety of cylinder heads and compression ratios have been made for the Model A and B (& G28T) style engines over the years by Ford globally, as well as by aftermarket producers. The original Model A Ford compression ratio was 4.2 to 1, which is quite low by most standards. Other cars of that era typically had ratios in the 5-6 to 1 range. If you have a high compression ratio, such 9.5:1 or 10:1, you will only be able to run a small amount of boost. The compression ratio that is built into your engine is called "static compression." When you combine the boost you are running in conjunction with your compression ratio, the result is known as the "Effective Compression Ratio." The Ford truck and car shop manuals say "...compression pressures are considered normal if the lowest reading cylinder is within 75% of the highest". When I did my 460 with 60K miles on it I got 4 cylinders @ 150, 1 cylinder @ 145, two cylinders @ 125, and one cylinder @ 118. The engine was at normal operating temperature. No oil was added.
